چکیده

The frequency-dependent viscoelastic shear modulus of concentrated suspensions of colloidal hard spheres is shown to be strongly modified as the volume fraction approaches the glass transition. The elastic or storage component, G0, becomes larger than the viscous or loss component, G00. The frequency dependence of G0 develops a plateau while that of G00 develops a minimum. We propose a physical model to account for these data, using a description of the glasslike behavior based on mode-coupling theory, and a description of the high-frequency behavior based on hydrodynamic flow calculations.

Particle dynamics in colloidal suspensions above and below the glass-liquid re-entrance transition

We study colloidal particle dynamics of a model glass system using confocal and fluorescence microscopy as the sample evolves from a hard-sphere glass to a liquid with attractive interparticle interactions. The transition from hard-sphere glass to attractive liquid is induced by short-range depletion forces. The development of liquid-like structure is indicated by particle dynamics. We identify...

Glassy dynamics and dynamical heterogeneity in colloids

Concentrated colloidal suspensions are a well-tested model system which has a glass transition. Colloids are suspensions of small solid particles in a liquid, and exhibit glassy behavior when the particle concentration is high; the particles are roughly analogous to individual molecules in a traditional glass. Because the particle size can be large (100 nm 1000 nm), these samples can be studied...

Slip and flow of hard-sphere colloidal glasses.

We study the flow of concentrated hard-sphere colloidal suspensions along smooth, nonstick walls using cone-plate rheometry and simultaneous confocal microscopy. In the glass regime, the global flow shows a transition from Herschel-Bulkley behavior at large shear rate to a characteristic Bingham slip response at small rates, absent for ergodic colloidal fluids. Imaging reveals both the "solid" ...

Slow dynamics of equilibrium density fluctuations in suspensions of colloidal hard spheres near the glass transition

A mean-field theory for the dynamics of equilibrium suspensions of colloidal hard spheres near the glass transition is presented based on the standpoint recently proposed by the present author. It is shown that although the relative magnitude of the density fluctuations to the mean equilibrium density is small even near the glass transition, they are described by a nonlinear stochastic equation...

High-order mode-coupling theory for the colloidal glass transition.

A theoretical approach is developed to derive a hierarchy of mode-coupling equations for the dynamics of concentrated colloidal suspensions, which improves the prediction of the colloidal glass transition. Our derivation is based on a matrix formalism for stochastic dynamics and the resulting recursive expressions for irreducible memory functions. The 1st order truncation of the generalized mod...
